If you feel your memory isn’t quite what it should be then there are some easy changes you can implement to improve your brain health without drugs or unhealthy practices.  A brain with poor memory function can be improved by good nutrition.

Your brain needs to have a smooth flow of communication between cells so that your memory stays sharp.  Eating the right foods can keep you from suffering from diseases such as Alzheimer’s and dementia.e cells in your body needs a supply of oxygen and healthy nutrients that keep the body working properly.

Antioxidants are also a great way to help with brain functionality and one of the best antioxidants are berries.  Berries contain anthocyanins which help protect the brain cells from breaking down.  According to Harvard researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, women who eat blueberries and strawberries at least once per week can delay mental decline by as much as 2.5 years.  Blueberries are actually the best berry to eat as they contain a deep blue pigment that reduces the oxidative stress which damages the brain’s cells.  But that’s not all.  Blueberries also contain flavonoids which produce very strong anti-aging effects on the brain and have even reversed brain damage in some special cases.  Finally, blueberries strengthen the neuron signals thereby improving motor skills and enhancing  balance and coordination.  By adding them to smoothies, salads and cereal, you can take full advantage of the nutritional benefits from berries to help improve your brain health.

To further improve your cognitive skills, start eating lean protein from free-range chicken and turkey as well as eggs and milk which contain high amounts of B-12.  Some symptoms of Vitamin B12 deficiency include poor memory, apathy, mood swings, fatigue and muscle weakness.  Researchers have found that having Vitamin B12 levels below 300 may double your risk of Alzheimer’s disease.  A study done at Tufts University in 2012 found that lower levels of B-12 in adults had a higher risk of declining cognitive skills.  Over 40% of  Americans have lower than prescribed levels of B12 and many of them do not even know it.   Seaweed, tempeh and nutritional yeasts are natural and very healthy ways to get more B-12 into your diet.

Walnuts Are Good Brain Health Food

If you want to improve your memory scores then eating walnuts may be the best food you can eat.  Walnuts contain alpha-linolenic acid which is a plant-based form of omega-3 fatty acids and help fight free radicals in the body helping the brain to stay strong and healthy.  Walnuts also contain vital nutrients such as manganese, copper, iron, phosphorous, magnesium, and calcium which help triple melatonin levels in the body.  Walnuts are also high in omega-3 fatty acids so they help keep the brain both fluid and flexible.
